The affected areas of New York are in a stage of long term recovery. The work required involves a range of activities depending on the site. The tasks include mucking out, mold remediation, tearing down, cleaning up, rebuilding and land development.

Currently Calvary Presbyterian and The Unitarian Church of Staten Island can host a maximum of 15 volunteers per church. In total the two churches have capacity to host of 30 volunteers (15 per church), depending on availability.

Calvary Presbyterian Church, Staten Island and The Unitarian Church of State Island are both providing housing ministries for volunteers. New York is a diverse area and the Volunteer Villages reflect that. The area is safe, vibrant and reflects the community and essence of New York’s diverse neighborhoods.

Current work efforts are with Friends of Rockaway in Far Rockaway, Queens, New York.

You will need to provide transportation to and from the work sites. Through a grant from Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, groups have the option to apply for 50% reimbursement on costs related to renting a vehicle and paying tolls while traveling within the five boroughs of New York for volunteer activities.

There are specific programs geared towards youth groups, and PHIA will work with youth groups to ensure that the work is meaningful and successful. Due to liability issues, some hosting facilities cannot accept anyone under the age of 16. Expertise is helpful, but not required. Your work site will be recommended based on your experience. Prior to your trip an assessment will be sent to you to better assist PHIA in connecting you with a volunteer opportunity.

Yes, every work site will have a supervisor provided by the onsite organization.

You will be in New York City where there is always something to do. All hosting sites are close to public transportation. A list of attractions and eateries will be sent to you prior to your visit so that you plan accordingly.

Typically each church requests an average of $30 per person per day donation for breakfast and lunch groceries, and home cooked dinners.

Through a grant from Presbyterian Disaster Assistance [PDA], PHIA is able to reimburse 50% of a volunteer group’s travel costs for travel within the New York City five boroughs for the purpose of volunteering to rebuild Sandy–impacted homes.
